Questions about life
Question: How can God not have a beginning?
Great Uncle Fred? I want to ask you a question about God. My mummy told me that God has always been around. How can God not have a beginning? (Georgia, aged six, Autumn 2010)
Answer:
Well, Georgia, thank you very much for your most interesting question. I try not to answer too many questions about God on this web-site because I do not want to get into arguments! Some people do not believe in God, you see. I do believe in God, mind you, and I think your question is very interesting so I shall try to answer it or explain why I cannot answer it. I think the main thing to remember is that time is a really funny thing and maybe not a real thing. You know how something which happened ages ago when you were really wee can feel like it happened just a minute ago? And something which happened last week seems like ages and ages ago? Well, maybe that is because time is not very real. We need it so that everyone gets to school in the morning, and all that sort of thing, but maybe real time is something different. What I mean, Georgia, is that there is a lot we do not understand and God is the biggest thing that we do not understand. Sorry if this seems like avoiding the question. Well, it is, because I do not know the answer. But it is good that some things stay a mystery, don't you think?
